The Huggie Union, or the Union of Huggie Communist Republics, is a country spanning the Huggie Continent from multiple coasts. It is the largest country in the world by land and is the second-most populous country in the world and the most populous country in the Huggie Continent. It is a highly urbanized country, with many of its population centres having more than 1 million inhabitants. The Huggie Union's capital and largest city is Huggie City, which is also its cultural capital. The Huggie Union emerged as its own entity after the collapse of the Huggie Empire, which administered several regions across the Huggie Continent.
The word Huggyo, or Huggie, first appeared in 989 in an ancient textbook called Hugetsvska Nuormka, which mentions the word Huget six times and Huggyo eighty-four times. It uses the Waskatimi alphabet and refers to a Waskatsuwamskchet crop field called Huggosmore. The people who wrote Hugetsvska Nuormka mistook the entire continent for Huggosmore. The word Huggie now refers to the planet itself, called Huggie World. Huggie means world in some languages and gives a sense of world embrace. Many countries today have referred to the world as Terra.
In 180 B.C. came the first-ever version of the "Huggies" called Smath. Martin Kosami Nomeke Koteni Povalplo Twelvth controlled Smath. (Martin Twelvth for short.) In 94 B.C., the first large-scale war that happened was known as “The First War” when the Shadistikans invaded the Smathtisians. The invasion was unsuccessful. 2 years later, the Tribal Huggies era began. The tribes of the jungles (Hufor), deserts (Husan), tropics (Hutro), and frosts (Hufros) existed.
The desert tribe had underground caves with rooms, shops, and tombs. The tombs were the locations of the dead kings, and the dead kings were said to travel to the underworld. The jungle tribe would make huge villages in the trees, many feet above the ground. They also built stone cubes to put their kings in, and they were in frequent combat with the frost tribe. This did not go well for the animals in the area. This is why the population in the Spear Forests is low for some animal species, most likely. In 1404, Hugetsvska followers fled Shadistika due to widespread civil unrest and over-taxation. Hugetsvska members wanted to distance themselves from Shadistika as much as possible. They developed a Shadistikan-based language, which is still considered a dialect of the Anklyfrayan language to this day. They called their language Huggyo because Huggyo in Advanced/Ancient Shadistikan means “We Shall Be the Only One.” It was also named after the Hugetsvska Nuormka book. (Read more in etymology) They mainly spoke Loquensh/English, but Huggyo is sometimes used in code and official form. (Huggyo means Huggie.)
The Huggies quickly expanded north to present-day Unisibers or Unisibersika (Huggie-Siberia), and they encountered natives. This was called “The Great Huggyo Expedition.” They put these natives (by force) into newly formed government jobs, agriculture, and security forces (military). The Huggyo Kingdom was established on November 4, 1404. Their leader was Aje (Age) Smihth (by monarchist force). Most of the natives were persecuted, intertwined with Huggie culture, or assimilated. Approximately 45,900,000 autochthonous natives are living in the Huggie Union today, 98.7% of whom live in the northern half of the Huggie Union. The Huggie Kingdom slowly grew out west before eventually declaring the west coast as Huggyo territory in 1449.
Shadistikans were upset that their civilians were leaving them and fleeing their country for another continent, so they set out on a journey to kidnap and persecute the escapees. When they arrived, Huggie forces were alerted and rushed to open fire on Shadistikan boats. This triggered the start of The Long War (1450-1593). The war consisted of various attempted conquests (approximately eighteen) of the Huggies. Eventually, running out of money and resources, the Shadistikans called for peace in 1593, agreeing to pay around $300,000 in reparations.
*This map above shows the Huggie Continent after the end of the reign of Emperor Basley IV. The Huggie Empire controls the northeast, the Doman Empire controls all of the south, there is a pocket in the middle controlled by various native groups; and the vast majority is unclaimed land that stretches from the northeast, midwest, southeast, and even scooping down the middle separating the Huggie Empire and Doman Empire. Speeland is on the east coast.
**This map above shows the Huggie Continent after the end of the reign of Emperor Graton. The Huggie Empire controls almost all of the northeast and is pushing south; much of the west remains unclaimed. The Doman Empire now shares a border with the Huggie Empire, and the Doman Empire has now significantly increased its land size. Speeland still remains to the east coast.
This map above shows the Huggie Continent after the reign of Emperor Seamus. The Huggie Empire controls the north, the Doman Empire controls the south, and Corislever has a southern pocket coast, with Speeland still remaining to the east coast.
Throughout the ages, the Huggie Kingdom later expanded and became a dynasty of kings and queens ruling over the Huggie domain. The Huggie Kingdom officially declared itself as an empire in 1612, transitioning King Dion III into Emperor Dion III. The following resulted in a greater conquest of foreign territories and a buildup of colonial possessions.
1612-1624: Emperor Dion III
Dion Cochem Wolfound III, or Emperor Dion III, was the first emperor of the Huggie Empire. Weeks after declaring the kingdom an empire, he initiated a war with the Indignus native group in the western Huggie Continent. He sent 15,000 troops to fight the Indignus, who only had about 2,000 in population. All Indignus citizens either died, assimilated, or were captured. Dion III took the northwest of the Huggie Continent, reaching the Aculonian Ocean. Dion III initiated sweeping tax reforms on the populous, allowing for property taxes to be reduced from a quarter an acre to a penny an acre. Dion III traded the cheap taxes in turn for citizens to complete a mandatory one-year service in the White Forces (under the White Party or the Whites), the empire's military. In 1620, Dion III launched an invasion of the Nuutuuk tribe in the southwest of the Huggie Continent, resulting in the death, assimilation, or capture of all Nuutuuk civilians. This did not lead to conquest, as Dion III's requests for territorial conquests were met with opposition. In 1624, Dion III died from pneumonia, twelve years into his imperial reign, and twenty into his rulership over the Huggie domain.
1624-1631: Emperor Basley IV*
Basley Wolfound IV, or Emperor Basley IV, was the second emperor of the Huggie Empire. In 1625, he persuaded the original Huggie Kingdom Congress to step down by force, leading to the Whites taking control of the country along with Basley IV's control over the empire. Basley IV used the White Forces to invade nearby native tribes in the northwestern Huggie Continent that were refusing to abide by Huggyo assimilation. This resulted in a three-year war ending in 1628 with the defeat of over 200 tribes, notably the Vootfoots, the Yuri, the Gamalon, and the Usseu. In 1630, Basley IV signed the Territorial Act allowing for future emperors to invade nearby countries, tribes, and factions on the Huggie Continent in the name of honoring the empire. In 1631, Basley IV died of unknown causes.
1631-1650: Emperor Graton**
Graton Wolfound XVII, or Emperor Graton, was the third emperor of the Huggie Empire. He initiated sweeping military reforms allowing for the White Forces to have a significantly increased budget, for more intense training, and less restrictive laws for soldiers committing theft and fewer laws on war crimes. He ordered the construction of the Imperial Palace, now the Presidential Palace, and many historical imperial government buildings, such as the Graton Hall, Gaumswit, the Imperial House of Huggiegrad, and the Town Plaza. The Imperial Palace was finished in 1641, ten years after the start of construction. In 1642, Graton announced he would be launching an invasion of the native groups that were pocketed in the middle. Many of them scattered around unclaimed territory during the war, which is now known as Graton's Slaughter. Graton's Slaughter lasted from 1642 to 1648, resulting in the mass assimilation, internment, and decimation of the Huggie Continent's native groups. In 1649, possibly fueled by ergotism, Graton had over seventeen of his esteemed military commanders incarcerated. One year later, he died of heart failure, likely caused by his ergotism.
1650-1653: Emperor Graton II
Graton Wolfound XVIII, or Emperor Graton II, was the fourth emperor of the Huggie Empire. He only ruled for three years and continued his father, Emperor Graton's, policies. He finished the completion of the Graton Statue within two years before dying of pneumonia in 1653.
1653 -1690: Emperor Seamus
Seamus Wolfound, or Emperor Seamus, was the fifth emperor of the Huggie Empire. Ruling for 37 years, he was a highly effective wartime leader, economic leader, and territorial conqueror. In 1655, Seamus signed the Military Act, which allowed soldiers to be significantly more prosecuted for theft, bribery, mutiny, and war crimes. In 1657, Seamus signed the Native Wars Doctrine, which stated that the Huggie Empire should no longer intrude on the lands of native tribes, which now mostly resided in unclaimed territories in the west.
Despite the act, Seamus continued into the west, with the army apparently trying their best not to intrude on native life. In 1660, the Doman Empire and the Huggie Empire signed a treaty to partition the unclaimed territory, and the Doman Empire would also cede the southern half of its country to become Corislever. In 1665, Seamus launched an expedition just north of Speeland, in which the island nation of Jamesland (now the Republic of James City, or James City) had set up a colony, known as New Jamesland. Seamus used diplomats and a light force to pay Jamesland about $20,000 for the land. The land had already been recognized as Huggyo the whole time, but was merely a paper claim, like most of the west. In 1670, the town of Huggietown slowly rose to become a city of fine arts, liberalism, trade, and bustling urbanism. Huggietown was considered the de facto capital, while Huggiegrad was really. In 1675, Seamus commissioned a group to help build up much of Huggietown, taking away from Huggiegrad, planning for Huggietown to eventually be the capital by at least the eighteenth century. In 1680, many public works projects taken on were finished, especially the Huggie Monument (a 600 ft tower that pointed into the sky), the Colis Trail, a long highway connecting cities, rivers, and trade hubs, especially connecting the Huggie Empire with the Doman Empire, and the House of Seamus, a massive 800,000 sq. ft palace complete with dining halls, recreational rooms, and elegancies. In 1685, the Huggie Empire experienced significant economic growth through Seamus' Literacy Act, which improved education for the masses, increased literacy rates by 35%, and spurred workforce development. In April of 1690, Huggietown officially became Huggie City and the official capital of the Huggie Empire. In June of 1690, Seamus caught an infectious disease while visiting native territories in the western empire. He suffered deeply from it and had to be treated by native "doctors" while in the west because it would not be fast enough to take him back to Huggie City. These natives supposedly had him die faster through various methods, and he was pronounced dead on June 29th, 1690.
1690-1701: Emperor Dsa-Nomen
Dsa-Nomen, or Emperor Dsa-Nomen, was the sixth emperor of the Huggie Empire. He was the first emperor of the Huggie Empire not to be of the Wolfound ancestry. Seamus directly chose him as his successor because he "managed the economy well" for certain aspects. Dsa-Nomen carried on many of Seamus' public works projects and built up Huggie City fairly well, officially moving all government buildings from Huggiegrad to Huggie City. Under Dsa-Nomen, the first boundaries were established, the early versions of mandates, states, and territories. Dsa-Nomen did not really do much for the empire, other than riding off of Seamus' success and keeping the economy well. In 1700, Dsa-Nomen celebrated the turn of the century by throwing a massive bash at the House of Seamus, inviting everyone, including serfs, soldiers, civilians, political elites, the poor, and the rich. At this party, Dsa-Nomen was kidnapped by a group of mentally deranged soldiers who overthrew his power for a day known as the Day of Infirmus. These soldiers wanted the Wolfound dynasty to return to power, but it did not happen. Dsa-Nomen was rescued by the Private Guard, and he was restored to power. A year later, Dsa-Nomen resigned for undisclosed reasons, dying shortly after.
1701-1735: Emperor Unusus
Since Dsa-Nomen had no living family, the next-in-line for emperor was Unusus Lee, or Emperor Unusus, the seventh emperor of the Huggie Empire. He was a political elite under Dsa-Nomen who was frequently loved by the Dsa-Nomen administration. In 1705, Unusus broke the Native Wars Doctrine by attacking the Phausau tribe in the northwest. Unusus claimed that the Phausau chief blew up a Huggie fishing boat on the west coast, though there is no evidence to prove this. Unusus sent Huggyo troops into the area, though the Huggies did not commit atrocities against the Phausau, who were societally expected to assimilate. In 1712, Unusus held the earliest recorded Huggyo military parade for the 100th anniversary of the Huggie Empire. In 1715, Unusus adopted a son named Maxwell Scotts, who was 17 years old at the time. In 1718, Unusus completed all of Seamus' and Dsa-Nomen's public works projects, eventually expanding Huggie City to become an enriched city of culture, fine arts, and literature. In 1720, Unusus ordered the construction of Huggie University, the famous liberal and free university that is still acclaimed to this day. In 1726, Huggie University was completed, and the surrounding Civitas Academica (commonly known as Civacada) neighborhood was completed, becoming a place for students and the rich. In 1730, Unusus aggressively expanded the control Lords had over serfs, which the serfs became increasingly common following the Great 1729, a massive economic crisis. In 1733, the serfs under Lord Bashire of the East revolted against Bashire, killing him and escaping. Unusus responded by allowing all Lords of serfs to control a small army and have even more control over the serfs. His son, Maxwell, grew a fairly-sized army under the guise that he owned serfs. In 1735, Unusus died of pneumonia.
1735-1752: Maximus the Betrayer, Emperor Maximus
Maxwell Lee, or Maximus, or Maximus the Betrayer, or Emperor Maximus, was the eighth emperor of the Huggie Empire. Immediately upon coronation, he gave much power to politicians who heavily favored him, or whom he was friends with. This angered many of the Whites and the army, whose commanding officers were replaced by Maxwell's henchmen. In 1736, Maxwell changed his name to Maximus to "mimic Shadistikan royalty," and in 1739, Maximus destroyed all Dsa-Nomen and Unusus shrines and statues. In 1743, Maximus took away very basic freedoms of civilians in paranoia that they were plotting to take the government over, and in 1745, Maximus announced interest in bringing back the "glory days of Shadistika and the Wolfound dynasty." In 1747, using his private army, Maximus raided the Imperial Palace, kidnapping many political elites, shooting White troops, and instating his army in the building. This angered the populace, but Maximus now had full control of the empire, declaring the empire to be "only ruled in the hands of Maximus." In 1750, Maximus plotted a takeover of the entire empire to install himself as a Military Dictator and create the Maximine Republic. In 1751, Maximus raided military bases and the Imperial Palace once more, declaring the Maximine Republic as official. A day later, the Republic ceased to exist due to Maximus' subsequent arrest. Maximus was later freed from jail and began to start another war against the empire. Foolishly, he rode on horseback himself with two untrained soldiers, with no armor and a sword, charging at the heavily armored and armed Huggie soldiers and died. He was remembered as a betrayer of the Huggie Empire, as Maximus the Betrayer. Even today, in the Huggie Union, he is remembered as a traitor because he opposed the Huggie people.
1752-1753: Emperor Nicholas
Nicholas Howlands, or Emperor Nicholas, was the ninth emperor of the Huggie Empire. Upon his coronation in August 1752, he condemned Maximus, as he was not in the bloodline of Dsa-Nomen or Maximus Lee. Instead, he was chosen to serve because he was the military commander of the Huggie Empire from 1748 until his coronation. In January 1753, Nicholas was fatally shot by a pro-Maximinian. He was dead upon arrival at the hospital. He served only five months, barely accomplishing anything. During his reign, the political elites were highly unstable, as half wanted the Maximine Republic to exist and half wanted to condemn him.
1753-1803: Emperor Charles
Charles Howlands, or Emperor Charles, was the tenth and longest-serving emperor of the Huggie Empire. In 1754, Charles passed the Maximus Law banning any praise of Maximus and making it fully illegal to incite any revolution against the Huggie Empire. In 1755, Charles made Huggyo-Christianity the official religion of the Huggie Empire, making the Crown officially entwined with religion, the first time that had ever happened. In 1756, Charles spent a million dollars (adjusted for inflation, around $57,000,000) to expand Huggie University and signed a law making it completely separated from the government, allowing for the free and liberal organization known as The Free Students to take ownership of the curriculum and the school grounds. The government was in charge of maintenance of the building, grants, and Civacada. In 1758, the Huggie Empire underwent a territorial dispute with the Doman Empire, resulting in multiple border clashes and the One Year War beginning in 1758. The Huggie Empire sent 20,000 troops, which outnumbered the 12,000 Doman troops at the border, resulting in a Huggie victory and a final recognition of the borders circa 1759. In 1762, Charles made a decision to completely open international trade. He also subsequently established the Royal Bank, a federal reserve established to use and distribute the Huggie dollar and to control inflation and interest rates. In 1765, the Doman Empire sent 5,000 troops to occupy the city of Williambrownton on the southern border. The Domans successfully occupied the city for five days before marching the majority of their troops to Huggie City to burn down the Royal Bank building. Half of it was burnt, and the arsonists escaped, free to commit a series of crimes, murders, and kidnappings across the southern Huggie Empire while making their way south to the Doman Empire once more. The Huggie Empire responded by completely burning down Williambrownton, assuming that it was filled with Doman traitors, and marched over 10,000 troops into the Doman Empire to commit mass crimes against civilians in the nation. This went on for about four months and was known as the Rightful War. The Huggie Empire ended the war in January 1766 by attacking the newly built capital of the Doman Empire at the time, Domania, burning over 30% of it. The Doman Empire surrendered and was forced to pay over $235,000 (about $10,000,000 today, adjusted for inflation) to the Huggie Empire for reparations.
In 1914, the War of the Nations (now known as Huggie World War I) began. The Doman Empire launched an assault on the Huggie Empire to claim what was called "The Lost Doman Territory." The Domans used an extreme tactic called population replacement. Domanian forces would relocate Huggyos living in cities to the rural countryside to work and replace many low-income people with higher-class aristocrats from the Doman Empire. The Doman Empire was looking far ahead of where they already were, as the Shadow Union aided the Huggie Union during HWW1. The war officially ended in 1918. The victors of HWW1 did not greatly punish the Doman Empire.
Lasting from 1922 to 1924, HWW2 was considered by some historians a continuation of the first conflict when the Doman Empire set out to conquer the territory they believed was theirs and their newly lost territory. They lost once again. The Domans launched a renewed campaign and grabbed an ally, the Corislever Empire, to conquer the Huggie Empire. Towards the end of the war, it was looking like the Huggies were going to lose. But with the mistake of Corisleveren bombing raids over Shadistikan islands, the Shadow Union quickly put a stop to the war. In 1939, the Doman Empire, severely weakened, saw a great ally called the Poket Union formed from the ashes of the Pokanoke Republic. The Pokets quickly swept through Tomania and Outer Kinkapaw. The Pokets saw the newly colonized Speeland from the Shadow Union in the North as a threat, so they invaded, looking to conquer all. A ceasefire deal was reached in 1940 with the newly established South Speeland and North Speeland. The North was controlled by the Shadow Union. In 1941, the Poket Union and the Doman Empire launched a massive surprise attack against the Huggie Empire using scorched earth tactics and brutal troop lines.
The Huggie Empire was already dealing with an ongoing civil war from the Yellowes side of the communists, who put together the White (Imperial) and Yellowe (Communist) forces to fend off attackers. The war ended in 1945, seeing the fall of the mighty Doman Empire. Following HWW4, the brutal Huggie Revolution began. The Huggie Empire fought against democratic southern Colis forces and northern Huggie Union forces. This war was also referred to as HWW5 but has since been called, offensively, the Wimpy War due to its lack of "world powers." Many see this as a lack of respect against the lives sacrificed for the freedom of their ideology. The end of the revolution ended in a split between the southern Colis and the northern Huggie Union. Their geopolitical tensions still exist to this day.
Zakov Thompson (ruling 1950-1960) was the first leader of the Huggie Union. He was the Chief Commander of the Huggyo Forces during Huggie World War 4 from 1943-1945. He led the communists to overthrow the empire through a brutal civil war called the Huggie Revolution three months after HWW4 ended. Following the war's end in 1950, Zakov Thompson declared the country as the Union of Huggie Communist Republics, under a truly mixed capitalist and communist economy called Thompsonism, which still exists today. From 1950 through 1951, Thompson started to develop Congress, consisting of the House, the Senate, and the then non-powerful Offices of the Communist Party (OCP). In the early months of 1951, he invaded Colis, ultimately failing in early 1952. In 1953, the Huggie Union was considered in much better living conditions than it was under the empire, and was considered a beacon of socialist freedom. In 1956, Zakov Thompson publicly announced that the Huggie Union was the first nation to boast a nuclear arsenal, claiming over 10 nuclear weapons were developed at the time. Colis followed shortly after. In 1957, Zakov Thompson unveiled Memorial Square, a massive field with monuments celebrating Huggie history and their victories in war, honoring fallen soldiers.
In 1960, Zakov Thompson died, leaving his vice president at the time, Owen B. Jones to take over as president. However, through a series of political bribes, his inexperienced son Zakov Thompson II (ruling 1960-1970) took power and declared himself as permanent leader. In 1961, Thompson II gradually increased his powers and started the construction of the infamous Red Wall border between Colis and the Huggie Union. In 1962, Thompson II realized the nation was not making enough money off of the agricultural sector and blamed it on the helpful fertilizing bugs, the bestapolenza bugs. He ordered all bestapolenza bugs to be killed, claiming that it was ruining cops and killing people through their food; however, this in turn led to a massive crop shortage and massacre of farmers who refused to comply. More than 17 million bestapolenza bugs were killed with harmful pesticides, and from 1963-1970, over 3 million people died due to the newly manmade famine, pesticides, and other reasons relating to crop management. In 1963, Thompson II ordered the arrest of over 300,000 people who refused to change their language from Huggie to Loquensh, and other political rivals. In 1965, Thompson II stripped all power away from the House and Senate, handing it over to the OCP, handpicking five pro-Thompson II individuals. Vice presidents who served during the 60s (Owen B. Jones, Burt Been Jr., Nicky Johansen) were considered the last true hopes of democracy, as Thompson II never touched the election process there. These vice presidents championed a sort of secretive freedom under the oppressive Thompson II and a "hope of democracy." In 1967, Thompson II ramped up border security at the Colisian border, often having soldiers pillage nearby Colisian towns and shoot anyone who got near the border. In 1968, Thompson II revoked rights to citizenship to more than 1.9 million native Huggies, 900,000 of whom died due to the lack of services and government care. In 1969, Thompson II launched a brutal invasion into the border of Colis called the "Colis Liberation War," with both sides committing heinous war crimes against each other. Thompson II would launch bombing raids, pillage nearby border towns, firebomb military bases, and forcibly remove civilians. Colis would respond with the same. Thompson II created a massive carving in the southeast "hook" of the Huggie Union called the Military Controlled District under immense paranoia. The Military Controlled District has not received statehood at all, nor will it ever likely, though it is not nearly as militarized today as it once was. It acts as a state, but is considered a territory. In 1970, Thompson II passed due to heart and lung complications with no successor.
The OCP overrode the original constitutional presidential succession laws to place a Thompson in charge, as they were expected to under the Thompsonist ways. They found that his direct son, Zakov Thompson III (now Peace-With-All Thompson), was not fit to rule and was an "anti-totalitarian hippie." The next in line was a prominent nephew politician named Zachary Thompson (ruling 1970-1972). He assumed office in 1970. Just weeks after taking office, Thompson signed the Revoking Act, which undid every law that Thompson II had made during his entire term. He started a process known as "dethompsonization." Zachary Thompson led the most liberal version of the Huggie Union since Zakov Thompson's reign. Zachary Thompson made his political career about denouncing his uncle and undoing his "fascist" ways. In 1971, Zachary Thompson saw the Huggie Union's economy, which was formerly forcibly held back by Thompson II's economic laws, rise to an actual normal developing rate. In 1972, Zachary Thompson was assassinated along with his Secretary of Defense. What followed was two years of chaos and no direct person in charge of the Huggie Union.
During the two years when there was no president in power, Congress and the offices of the Communist Party were a mess, and they were considering appointing the vice president or Zachary Thompson's son, Jalen Thompson. In 1973, 17-year-old Liam Souza made his way into the Zakov Thompson memorial and delivered his 1-minute speech saying
"I should enjoy life just as well as the next person. If you want this to happen, this 'enjoyness', then you must stop doing your nepotist ways; stop believing the nepotist ways. Whether you're disabled, able, old, young, communist, Colisian, you should have the freedom of a great leader. Help us this year, help us, oh God help us."
In late 1973, Souza was invited to a debate with his political rival Oauhu Kelly, and he dominated the debate, easily winning all votes from Congress, the Senate, and the offices of the Communist Party for Souza to become president. Liam Souza took the oath of office on March 22nd, 1974, shortly after his 18th birthday. Immediately, Souza ended the Colis Liberation War, and he saw problems in the government and quickly built up congressional and senatorial power. He passed a renaming of Thompson City and Thompsongrad to something else through Congress, which had a vote. The majority, in response to a liking of Liam, renamed the cities to Souza City and Souzagrad. Souza immediately improved education and built up large universities and health facilities in these cities and other cities. Souza is known for having a long-term approach and became increasingly unpopular in the 1990s. A group of extremist far-right men attempted an assassination on Souza, burning much of the Nogorograd Hall in Nogorograd in 1997. Souza was not injured. Souza helped improve Colisian relations a lot. In 2023, Souza started an unpopular losing war against the Corridor Islands.
In April 2025, Liam Souza stepped down as president to become Head of the Union, or practically the ruler of the country. Political backlash was severe, and multiple lawsuits are against him right now. Souza is a polarizing leader who has become increasingly authoritarian since 1997.
The Huggie Union consists of one main Communist Party, under which the Conservative Party and Liberal Party function, which are considered two factions. These political factions are key for controlling Congress. Congress consists of 700 House members, 200 Senate members, and 10 Adviser members. There are two other branches in the Huggie Union: The Executive Branch and the Offices of the Communist Party (OCP). The Executive Branch consists of departments like the Agricultural Department, the Defense Department, and the Energy Department. (There are many more). The OCP consists of five permanent supreme council members who have absolute and elite authority over the Huggie Union. Following Thompson II's death, Zachary Thompson came in and removed all his appointed five members and put in different politically oriented members. Souza gradually removed these members during his tenure for more pro-Souza members. (Infamously, Souza started a fake marital scandal against former council member Lorum DeVonte, which forced DeVonte to resign.) Recent laws passed by Congress have made it possible for a new party to take over the Communist Party, and laws are attempting to be passed to remove the OCP. The President can serve for life, which means that the Vice President has their own elections, ones that are costly and highly publicized, similar to other countries' regular presidential elections. The Vice President also has a Presidential Clerk, practically the third in line to the President. If the President is unable to serve or dies, the Vice President is supposed to take over, but in all cases of the deaths of the Presidents, the OCP has somehow been able to make the next president by their choice. All members of the governing system of the Huggie Union, except the President and OCP members, align with factions of the Communist Party (i.e., Conservative, Liberal) to get elected and serve their faction.
KEY
For those who cannot see the image, there is extreme winters above Kakoontown and up through Aculon, and heat from southern Colis and down. Two rivers run across the Huggie Union, and one is important because it houses the big five cities of the Huggie Union.
Located to the left is the map of the Huggie Union.
It shows the states, rivers, and cities of the union.
The Military Controlled District is also in the south, which is a chunk of land that has been protected since the Colis Liberation War of the 60s, initiated by Zakov Thompson II. It has not received statehood at all, nor will it ever likely, though it is not nearly as militarized as it once was. It acts as a state, but is considered a territory.
Surprisingly, 78% of the population lives in the eastern half of the country from the border of South Uptown Hill and Hugotexam to Billiam and Upgradding. The east and west population divide is almost completely divided by a line through the center of the country.
